Featured map for 2019-02-09: Erik the Reptile by flagmyidol

Thumbnail of the map 'Erik the Reptile'

A retile is a special type of collaboration that takes more explaining than I can fit into this feature. [forum.droni.es] It is a simple concept, however, that is much more difficult to execute than one would think. Many maps are made fluidly, with tiles and objects changing together. The rigidity of retiling allows an author to flex their skills and find innovations they would not have thought of before. I'm not sure that flagmyidol found any new ideas in this map but the way it plays feels like it could have been an original. Speaking of originals... [nmaps.net] — origami_alligator

Featured map for 2019-02-04: the Blue Danube by rocket_thumped

Thumbnail of the map 'the Blue Danube'

It's hard to come across a good prisoner-style map but here is one that asks you one simple question: "How badly do you want to escape?" Contrary to the genre, this map doesn't take prisoners. If you're not ready to think ahead, make a run for it, and take a leap of faith at just the right moment, you'll be dead on the yard before you know it. But if you have trouble figuring it out on your own, prior inmates have posted demonstrations on how to escape. Good luck! — origami_alligator

Featured map for 2019-02-01: Playing Chicken with the Sun by XY

Thumbnail of the map 'Playing Chicken with the Sun'

The sun, our humble destination. Within its tentacles of plasma hides the keys to your escape from this hellish atmosphere and the source of your eventual death. The core of this celestial giant holds something sought after by most ninja but it is incredibly dangerous. One false move and you'll be torn apart and become fuel for thermonuclear fusion. Ironically, you'll probably be ejected as gold in billions of years when the sun dies. I guess that's what they call the circle of life. — origami_alligator

Featured map for 2019-01-29: Bandit by krusch

Thumbnail of the map 'Bandit'

When the creators of N allowed us to go wild with the map editor, I don’t think they realised how diverse and interesting the maps created by the community would become. This map should be immediately recognisable to anyone who played the survival genre. The challenge presented by krusch was to tempt players who wouldn’t normally try their hand at glory, but this presents a real challenge and a good teaching moment. Manipulating rockets can be a difficult thing to learn and this one gives the opportunity to learn how to do it for as long as you can survive. — origami_alligator

Featured map for 2019-01-17: Super Spelunky [The End] by Nexx

Thumbnail of the map 'Super Spelunky [The End]'

Many years ago, Nexx and I were both part of a large community project called "Memoirs of the Ancients", a 500-map pack made by some of NUMA's best, most innovative authors. Nexx was one of the most passionate members of the project, helping everyone become better authors and finding a unique style. The project was never finished. When I replayed this map, it reminded me of the care and thought that was put into this place by Nexx and others. This is the final map from a great author. I hope you enjoy solving it as much as I did. — origami_alligator

Featured map for 2019-01-09: Fissure by 1211

Thumbnail of the map 'Fissure'

DDA, short for "Don't Do Anything", seem to be a dead art form. Like art, it's difficult to conceive of how one creates a masterpiece such as this. What makes this special is the use of the "prisoner" style, where the ninja is caught between two enemies for a significant portion of the map. The feat itself sounds impossible, and yet 1211 manages to have created something that leaves me in awe. There were many creative, unique, and innovative pioneers of the DDA map that laid the groundwork for 1211. This one set the benchmark for all those to follow. — origami_alligator

Featured map for 2019-01-05: Take On Me by SkyRay

Thumbnail of the map 'Take On Me'

This is a beautiful map by SkyRay. It has clouds, and cows, and a hot air balloon. Don't judge by the thumbnail because there is so much more to see.

The gameplay is perfectly simple, complementing the image and the atmosphere it creates. Immerse yourself in a kingdom of soft sunlight, waterfalls and caves. This map evokes a feeling of genuine wonder that makes it so satisfying to play.

SkyRay, thanks for the map and the nostalgia. Y'all, I hope you enjoy this map.
And did I mention it has cows? — script

Featured map for 2018-12-16: Chainlink by stepself

Thumbnail of the map 'Chainlink'

"Chainlink" is an absolute classic.

I was reminded of this map just today, and a few minutes in I was worried the predictable flow of the map would leave it feeling dated; however, the more I played it, the more I found myself trying to improve my highscore using triple jumps and finding quicker ways of collecting the gold caches that float strategically in the air. It's also hard to believe that Stepself actually made this before the release of 1.4. The aesthetic style is timeless and reminiscent of styles made popular by tktktk and Metanet. — ska

Featured map for 2018-11-04: weekend wars by GreenEggsAndHam

Composition.

The perfect combination of elements which complement and complete each other in a brilliant and balanced harmony. Often we have tried to synthesize this gem through faulty and futile means, but our labor results in unpolished stones. True beauty is not something created, but something found: a diamond in a rough world. Composition is that which is most sought-out and that which is least appreciated. It is impossible to ignore that faint flicker of creation. I have sought composition, and I have found it.

Anyway, here's weekend wars. — Aidiera
