Do you use nreality or v1.4? If v1.4, then ned is certainly more convenient. In NReality, however, you can type the number of the map into a text box in userlevels, click on a button, and play it directly without having to add the map to your userlevels.txt:

You should only become undead when you hit them, provided you use neditor. On userlevels, I don't know what happens.

Point #1: The undeath state is rare, I think only in userlevels. I played this in NED, and it worked fine, I survived.

Point #2: Why would anyone play in userlevels? its more annoying and less efficient

If I recall correctly, it puts you into a state of undeath, where you exist but can't interact with anything... haven't used userlevels in forever, though.
