Description | ...he's gone.
Not that I was here for ages. But I made a map a little while ago, which gave some people, including myself, the idea that I might return. But I'm not going to. I've thought about this, and the reasons follow. This one goes out to TheAdster. Wanna know why? Because I bet most of you newer guys don't know who the hell he is. The reason I do is because I was around when numa and metanet were still cool. Numa was a fun place to be, the forums weren't filled with egotistical jackasses, you could find fun maps and though the systems weren't perfect, they worked. The numa I was presented with when I arrived was much more friendly, and much more functional. I could, get this, search by rating. I type in a word in the URL of a search and download thousands of maps in userlevels format. And what do we have now? A nicer layout, sure, but one where I can't search by title, I can't sort by rating, where rating goes up in blocks of 20% and I can't get more than like 50 maps per search. So when a new guy goes to numa, how the hell do you expect him to find some good maps? Featured maps, you say. Well, I"m sorry, but can never and will never be as good as a simple rating. Hell, you only had to look to a site like deviantart, and think "hey, maybe we could refine our rating search" rather than ditching it alltogether. But you didn't, and you refused to listen to the people who were talking sense, and who understand the principle of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." This map isn't complete, simply because I couldn't be bothered. Why should I? Ever since this change in the community, map making has been a chore. I did it because I felt that some people got enjoyment from my maps, but I just can't be bothered anymore. Anyone who can be, feel free to complete this. So goodbye numa. I'll try to remember you as you were back in the days where I could find good maps, good authors, and enjoy playing and submitting maps. I hope you all grow up, and maybe one day we can have what worked back on the site. and please race people, make more shit like this: http://www.nmaps.net/108797 Bunny, out. |

Gone with the wind
Though you never heard my name, as I'm a player not a maker, I'll always remember you. I started playing N at the period you're talking about and I enjoyed it very much. I agree with all your opinion, old days were better. Now I just stick with destiny, boonie92, usaswim and wulfgang's maps. I have created map packs, which each of them consists with a single author like yourself, Adster and others.
I'd like to salute Adster in the name of your dedication. His maps were so artistic, so wicked and overwhelming, so imaginative that I was dying every day to see another work of his to be submitted on numa. And yours as well.
Communication is so strange a thing that it always finds a way to happen. Language is just the most common way of it. Playing a map of an author is another way, and in terms of this, you are like Shakespeare my friend.
I have enjoyed playing your maps with much delight and satisfaction.
I wish you a good and happy life.
Farewell...

Just don't contribute to the problem. Keep mapping, even if it's just three times a year. You remain my second-favorite race mapper. ;)
Later bro.

I hate to say it but I disagree.
I think the nostalgia of Old NUMA is what makes a lot of older authors feel that it was better back in the day. I came to the community somewhere around 80000 maps and though I didn't really see it at first, the community was full of people who were simply around to piss others off. Look around, Bunniesandsheep (if you've even been around much since the redesign). We don't have so many trusted, popular authors multiaccounting with the intention of sniping other maps. We aren't sitting around with a Top Rated section that rarely shows anything more than those same 10 maps I saw for the first year I was around. (Though seems like we replaced that useless page with the Active Authors page, oh well.) If you are simply complaining about functionality, I'm with you there, but I've been happy to trade functionality for friendlier people.
As for originality, we're coming up on map number 200,000. For anybody who has been here more than 1.5 years they've seen most every trick in the book with N, or at least the tricks that matter. It's not uncommon for people to recycle the same material and anybody who has been around long enough will start to see similarities between previous maps they've played and newer maps they are yet to play. It's inevitable, really.
It's too bad you're going but I wish you the best wherever you're off to. :)

For a second time...
Farewell. I agree with you on the 'good ol days' part. And i do believe there are a lot of jerks on here nowadays. I hope to see you again one day!
Oh, and i do remember TheAdster back then. I havent seen much of him now if he is currently here.
Once again, Farewell my friend.

I heard of TheAdster
but this is the first time I've seen your maps. I'm into race maps a lot, their exciting and fun to make as well, so not hearing your name with all your races makes me happy.
I agree that some parts of the system feel broken, but that may only be because I was/am still subject to a mass snipers effects whenever I post. However I'm past that & do not care about his demands anymore (not negotiating with terro.. blah). I believe that even though one may see that the system is broken down, the people under the system all feel it & live through it. Nearly everyone is nice in some aspect and all the "rude" or bad ones leave out of boredom rather quickly. Every person that stays contributes to the community, even people like Evil_Sire that gets on everyone's nerves (except a few like my own).
Btw, I made it to the end of your race & there were some great concepts in it. Particularly the jump off the 1 tiles to the 2/6 tiles on the middle left.

cool map
I have to agree with you. map making feels like a chore to me as well.
The only time i ever make maps now is when i have a day at home by myslef... which isn't often.
sad to see the oldest remaining race maker leave though.
have fun in the real world :D

Actually you have it more or less backwards
The community is much nicer now, NUMA is much (much) more comment-oriented than ratings, and it works brilliantly. In the old times it was more or less guaranteed that you were going to get close to double the number of ratings as comments, as most people didnt comment on a map. In the present NUMA, you get the exact opposite, with people commenting but not rating much more frequently.
This is the effect of the new rating system, and although i was skeptical at first, it has worked really well.
Also, with so many talented mappers around in the present day, there is almost always a good map sitting right there on the hot maps page, and let's face it, the top rated maps weren't always the best ones anyway.
Bitesized was good, and I still think it was better than featured maps. So i'm with you there, at least.
Goodbye, again.

I know the Adster.
We're great mates, (I hope), and I nearly went to the same uni as him. Unfortunately, Warwick and Bath gave me better offers. XD

eh, seems all a bit
over the top. It's no big deal. The ratings system was broken, with the same maps staying in the top rated page all the time, and people focussing so much on getting rates, getting pissed off at snipers, making DDAs, tiles, N-arts purely to get rates. all that. but anyway. bye. heh. I diddnt actually know you were back though. so. I guess hi as well.. heh. hi/bye

Hm
Maybe I'll try making another race sometime...
I'm curious about one thing... are you leaving forever, or leaving until things change?

Yup
I miss NUMA, too, but maybe that's just nostalgia and resistance to change.
