Description | Syracuse Syndrome (also known as Impending Retribution Syndrome) is a condition common amongst the family members of murderers. First defined as a betrayal of genetic ties, it now includes social connections and other relations. Syracuse Syndrome was first coined in 2015 by Dr. Louis Henry Carter in the case of Peter Lawson.
Lawson, 28, was a postage worker living in Syracuse, New York. On August 14th, he left his three year old daughter home alone one night to go drinking with some friends. The house was broken into and the girl was kidnapped; no ransom note was left behind. For over three months police searched for clues to explain the kidnapping, but eventually Lawson broke down and confessed that it was staged. He claimed that he couldn't afford to support his daughter. The girl was later found drowned in a nearby lake. Margaret Waters, his wife, divorced him in November, publicly severing all ties to him. She also lead several campaigns to prosecute him in court. On June 21st, 2016, Lawson was tried and found guilty for one count of murder and one count of child abuse. He is currently serving a 25 year sentence in an undisclosed state prison. |
