could you try
a map of the world again? I noticed you tried once before, but it couldn't fit. Perhaps you could use some objects to help you? Like for the islands, e.g. cuba, iceland, madagascar, borneo. That way you can make the continents smaller because you wouldn't have to worry about making the islands with tiles. I've been debating trying to make one myself, but since you need ideas, I'm throwing it back to you again.

this website [photography.nationalgeographic.com] is full of awesome photography and has a "photo of the day" option from what they think is the best image. There's also a gallery of the most popular pictures. Perhaps you can get some inspiration there?
