lol, the same goes to tilesets, look at my eary maps, their pretty damn ugly. simply put, spend alot more time, if you're extremely pleased with the result, it will be satisfactory for everyone else.
astheoceansblue's map theory is good help, just read through it a few times

it takes a bit of practice to get good momentum from your jumps, you later develop an ability to do it easily, I can't really help but say practice. And perhaps to say that you need to jump the second you touch the wall or tile while holding the direction you want to go.
