try using more tiles. You can still have an open atmosphere using more tiles.

If you want inspiration for what kind of tiles to make, think of a jagged cliff, or a boat, or buildings of some sort. themes can help spur creativity, especially when you're a new author. Once you've got a decent number of tiles down then add in some objects and see where that takes you.
