I've had to take liberties with all of them so far, but yes I'm using references.
Ivysaur and Seaking are just from the 3rd gen official art.
Charizard is from the Dark Charizard card art (the first one).
Lugia is based on one of the renders of Shadow Lugia from XD.
Hmm.
Ivysaur looks the best so far because of how limiting the tiles are. He's mostly jagged shapes (easy to do with tiles), and it was fairly simple to fit his entire art inside the level frame. Charizard and Lugia are much more streamlined in design, requiring a lot more smooth lines. Those lines are easier to get at a large size, which is why they both go off-frame, and even then there are still issues. I could just do Pokemon that are as accommodating to N's tiles as Ivysaur....

If this is okay with you, I take the tileset, put the objects to make the border, and then fill it with color. So as I make the body, feet, wings, etc... I take away the tileset. Or should I just use a different picture, if you don't want me to use the tiles as a reference?

It's definitely a wonderful depiction of Lugia, but it feels stretched out with the use of tiles in the head and stomach. A fine example of placement and arrangement, regardless.

uhhh...
this isn't so great. i've never (seen? watched? read?) pokemon, and i can't tell what this is supposed to be. it's not very distinct. doesn't look very good in my opinion, and certainly not as good as the first three.
